headings.

Pinch. Pencil. Goblet. Are we still talking about curtains? Here is an easy guide to make sense of all the jargon with a few tips along the way to help you pick the heading style for your scheme.

SINGLE PINCH
Pinch pleat is a decorative heading for curtains, suitable for all fabrics. Pinch pleats use more fabric and are fuller than pencil pleats. The pleats are hand-sewn in and permanently fixed so it is important to get the measurements spot on as you won’t have the flexibility of a pencil pleat.

Top Tip: This is a great heading for a more luxurious & tailored look.

DOUBLE PINCH
As you may have guessed, this is a double up of the single pinch. Requiring more fabric, this heading is more decorative and lends itself to a fuller more traditional look.

Top Tip: The pinch pleats curtains have to sit underneath the pole or track to be able to undulate so make sure to pick the right hardware as it will be on show.

TRIPLE PINCH
You guessed it, we’ve tripled the single pinch for the most decorative heading of the pinch family.

Top Tip: Requiring a lot of fabric, this heading style lends itself to a more traditional, full curtain. A bold heavyweight pole would finish this look.

PENCIL
Pencil pleat is the traditional standard heading for curtains, often associated with ready mades. Suitable for most fabrics and for all types of tracks and poles, the curtains are supplied un-pulled to be gathered to the required width (which creates a heading that looks a lot like pencils lined up – hence the name!).

Top Tip: Go for a deep pencil pleat for a more unique look.

EYELET
Probably the most well known heading as it’s commonly used for ready made curtains due to ease of hanging.

Top Tip: While it’s an inexpensive option, it can be a trickier curtain to manoeuvre on a pole as it will scratch over time. Best avoided in our opinion.

WAVE
This stylish heading creates fluid waves of fabric that appear to float below your desired track or pole. This is a clean, relaxed look for curtains that works well on large bifold doors.

Top Tip: This heading requires a specific pole or track to create the undulations.

INVERTED
The inverted pleat has a flat fronted finish, creating a clean, unfussy look. However, due to the fullness in the back, inverted pleats don’t always stack in quite the same tailored way that a pinch does.

Top Tip: Don’t use a striped fabric for this one as you might lose the repeat in the folds creating a rather strange effect when stacked back.

CARTRIDGE + GOBLET
Cartridge pleat curtains create a simple style. They are made by shaping a single fold at the top of the curtain and filling it with a tight roll of interlining to create a rounded finish. While made differently, Goblet curtains have a similar look and feel but with a pinched bottom to create a “goblet” or “wine glass” look.

Top Tip: Unless you have a lot of stacking space either side of the window, these pleats are best avoided as they take up a lot of space when open.
